Features of a Good Office Chair

We spend a good 8 to 10 hours in the office during weekdays or sometimes even more. That’s practically half a day of sitting and occasionally walking during breaks or lunch time. Especially, if you are one of those people whose job involves computers and lots of paperworks. This sedentary lifestyle can affect our health. Sitting all day can cause back, shoulder, and neck pain which in the long run can lead to herniated discs and other back injuries. Taking quick breaks and readjusting your position are not enough. Proper posture is always necessary, but it all depends on a good office chair.

That is why it is important that our workspaces are ergonomically designed. Ordinary furniture just won’t work. Office chairs, tables, file cabinets and other standard office fixtures should cater to the needs of employees. There are various chairs available today. It is one of the most in-demand pieces of furniture in the market. Choosing the right office chair should be given importance. After all, you spend more time sitting in the office doing something. One of the most important office equipment is an ergonomic office chair. An ergonomic chair should have the proper height and can be adjusted so it leaves your feet flat on the floor and not hanging. Otherwise, a footrest is necessary.

  • One also has to make sure that his or her office chair adheres to the standard width of 17 to 20 inches. This does not only allow the user to sit comfortably but gives enough space for the lower back to breathe.
  • It would also help if the backrest is attached to a recliner to allow your neck and back to relax even for a few minutes. It should be adjustable to be able to move forward or backward, the angle depending on your preference. Some backrests are designed to support the curve of the spine. This is an important feature to support you’re body’s lumbar region. It also allows for good posture and avoids slouching.
  • Modern office chairs swivel on their base. They can be rotated and moved so that the user does not have to strain his or her body while reaching over something. Sometimes they come with rollers to make moving to different directions a lot easier.
  • Office chairs should also have armrests to help you arms relax after hours of reaching for the telephone and the keys on your computer.
  • A breathable padding is a must to provide comfort especially during extended working hours. Seat materials made of plastic or leather are fine, but cotton or cloth based seat materials are much better.

Good office chairs should provide maximum comfort and support for your body.
